The couple reportedly started dating around 2014.

“When we went out the first time, I was like, ‘This is a totally different vibe and it’s way better,’” McCain shared on The Ben Shapiro Show in October 2019. “I tell women, ‘Conservative men have better family values and they take dating, family and marriage more seriously.’ I think if you’re serious — which I was when I met my husband — about getting married and having kids and wanting to go to the next phase, I just found … finally dating a conservative man was the one. He took it seriously.”

Later that month, Meghan explained on The View that the couple had been “together for years” and were inspired by her father Senator John McCain’s health struggles. (The late senator died in August 2018 from glioblastoma.)

“Everyone keeps asking me, ‘How did you get engaged?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, we were at Mayo Clinic and my father had his scan,’” she shared at the time. “And we got engaged because we decided to sort of celebrate life and celebrate being alive and all these things. It’s not the most romantic story, but he is my partner.”

Meghan also noted that she was surprised to be wearing a ring because she “never thought” she would get married.

“I want the single girls out there to know, I don’t consider this an achievement, and it’s just part of my life,” she said. “Wait for the men who love strong women. Don’t settle for less. Don’t settle for anything else.”

“I look back at those pictures now, and I see a woman hiding her shock and sorrow,” she wrote in reference to the photos that were taken the day she found out she miscarried. “I am posed for the camera, looking stern and strong, representing my fellow conservative women across the country. But inside, I am dying. Inside, my baby is dying. I knew I was pregnant before I formally knew I was pregnant. My body told me in all the ways women are familiar with. It told me in the same ways I was miscarrying.”

After she publicly shared her loss, Meghan thanked everyone for their “beautiful and kind responses” to her essay.

“Ben and I are the luckiest, most incredibly blessed people in the world surrounded by love and support,” she wrote via Instagram.

I consulted with my doctors and they advised that for the safety of my baby and myself, I should be extra vigilant about limiting the amount of people we come into contact with.”

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Meghan took to social media to share a sweet message for her husband while they were stuck in quarantine.

“If somebody told me the first night we met when we did nothing but laugh and drink whiskey neat until the sun came up that one day you would be taking care of me, keeping me calm, cooking my every craving, rubbing my back, making me turn off cable news when I start to cry because of the intense pain and suffering our country is in, play scrabble and Mario Kart with me anytime I want and doing anything and everything to make this upside down nightmare a comfortable haven while I was pregnant with your baby and quarantined during the apocalypse … I would have thought one of you were smoking something really powerful,” she wrote alongside a selfie of the pair via Instagram.

Meghan continued by noting that “life keeps throwing” them “curveballs,” but they both knew when they met “there was no one else for either of [them] in the world.”

“It was like God finally formally introduced us but we had already known who we were waiting for,” she explained. “Our love has always been easy and wild. I love you and couldn’t have created you in my mind, Ben. There’s no one I would rather be in a foxhole with. But the universe sure does have a f***ed up sense of humor.”
